Kessil: Tuna Sun Vs Tuna Blue

We know Kessil has two separate series of lights – Tuna Sun and Tuna Blue. Though the models are same (like Kessil A80 or A160) for both Tuna Sun and Tuna Blue but they are created for completely different purpose. The kelvin rating for Tuna Sun is 6000k – 9000k, which makes it great for freshwater aquatic plants growth.

The Kessil A80 Tuna Blue Review

At a glance: The Kessil Tuna Blue A80 LED Light

Alright, let’s start with first impressions. The Kessil Tuna Blue A80 LED Light is a lighting system for your aquarium. It has the main light head which includes all the controls on top it the head. Very convenient and comfortable to use and adjust.

What’s also nice is the Kessil Tuna Blue A80 LED Light comes with a passive cooling system which prevents overheating. You also get a mini gooseneck mounting attachment to hold the light head, or the Kessil Tuna Blue A80 LED Light, in place. Very lightweight, super compact and pretty subtle looking too.

It comes in an entirely black body and the design and construction looks very contemporary. So far so good. Now let’s dig into the more important features!

The Kessil Tuna Blue A80 LED Light Head

The Kessil Tuna Blue A80 LED Light head is a small and petite little thing. It has a circular shape and measures 12 cm in diameter and 2.5 cm in thickness. The main part of this head, the LED light, sits in the center of the head, and on top of the head you have the controls.

You have button for output, and a button for input. Beside them, you will find control knob for color and one for intensity. One really nice thing about the Kessil Tuna Blue A80 LED Light is it’s cooling feature. No, it doesn’t have a built-in fan or cooler. What is does have is a very smart design which includes the use of powder-coated aluminum, which keeps the heat and overheating at bay.

Now, a little more about the LED light itself. The LED light uses 5 individual LEDs arranged in a tightly packed cluster less than 10mm across, and also comes with secondary lens. As a result of this, the light output is absolutely opaque and stunning.

You get no disco effect whatsoever, and it glitters through the water like magic. You can obviously also adjust the color and intensity to bring out the best of this lighting system and make it adapt to your mood and ambience. Mind you, as a result of the intensity and color adjustability, you also end up controlling the temperature.

Light Distribution

The gooseneck mounting attachment of the Kessil Tuna Blue A80 LED Light will stand at about 15 cm from the bottom. The spread and distribution of the light is nice and potent, but we’d also have to say that it wouldn’t work on med to large sized tanks. The light distribution and spread is more suited to small and nano aquariums with less demanding corals. Absolutely fine for softies or LPS.

Pros:

  • Lightweight and compact
  • Has controls; very adjustable
  • Swiveling gooseneck mounting attachment
  • Intense light output
  • Passive cooling

Cons:

  • No PAR readings
  • Not intense enough for large or deep tanks
